Vivinavi : Joetsu : (Japan) Joetsu

Kobayashi Kokei （ 1883 ～ 1957 ）, a master of Japanese painting from Joetsu City, Japan, was active at the Japan Art Institute during the turbulent Meiji ・ Taisho ・ Showa Era. While based on sketching, Kogei thoroughly studied Yamato-e, Rimpa school, and old Japanese paintings, and reached the so-called "neoclassicism" that incorporated modern sensibilities and matured his painting style, leaving a solid mark in the history of modern Japanese art. In 1950 ） he became the first person from Niigata Prefecture to be awarded the Order of Cultural Merit.

While his works were mainly exhibited at the Japan Art Institute Exhibition （ and the Inten Exhibition ）, he also exhibited his works at various painting organizations. He has never skipped a beat in the creation of not only large works but also small ones, and has left behind many beautifully drawn and colorful works.

This exhibition commemorates the 140th anniversary of Kogei's birth by presenting a retrospective of his work from his early years to his later years, focusing on representative works such as "Akuto" and "Taketori Monogatari. In addition to his works, the exhibition will also focus on related materials, his residence, and his studio where he worked, providing an opportunity for visitors to learn about both his artistry and his personality.
